The Relic by Mikael Håfström

Psychological thriller dealing with the question: “Is it demonic possession i.e. needing exorcism or mental illness i.e. needing medical intervention?” This film is based on the book by journalist Matt Baglio – “The Rite: The Making of a Modern Exorcist” which gave a true life account of Father Gary Thomas (http://www.mattbaglio.com/book.html).  Michael Kovak (first big screen performance by Colin O’Donoghue) feels that in his family, one has only two choices: to be a mortician like his father (Rutger Hauer) or to go into the priesthood. He decides to do the latter. After four years, just before he is to be ordained, Michael sends a letter of resignation to the Father Superior (Toby Jones). Michael has serious doubts regarding his faith and his belief in God and the existence of the Devil. He doubts that he is being called into the priesthood. The Father Superior believes otherwise and after witnessing an accident involving a young woman being seriously injured, extends an invitation to Michael to attend a class on exorcism in Rome. Michael had calmly comforted the young woman, absolved her sins and commended her soul to God in the last moments of her life. He reluctantly accepts and after his first class he is asked to go and see Father Lucas (Anthony Hopkins) a renowned exorcist. He also meets Angelina (Alice Braga), a young reporter who is researching to do an article in a newspaper. Father Lucas is currently performing an exorcism on 16-year-old Rosaria (Marta Gastini) who had been impregnated due to incestuous relations with her father. Supernatural events begin to occur ultimately leading to Father Lucas becoming possessed. Unlike other films of this genre, for example William Friedkin’s “The Exorcist”, The Rite emphasizes the psychological and spiritual effects over special effects. Anthony Hopkins again demonstrates his versatility with his execution as he becomes possessed.
