Balada Triste de Trompeta (The Last Circus) by / par Álex de la Iglesia

The director’s weird sense of humour shines once again in this politically tinged hysterical farce that attacks the Fascist regime in Spain. The film is an account of Javier (Carlos Areces) tragic life following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. Both were clowns in traveling circuses in their day.
Our story begins in 1937 when Javier, then a young boy, is witness to his father being press-ganged (along with the rest of the circus troop) into leading an assault against Franco’s forces. His father is arrested and sent to prison and eventually executed. Just prior he tells his father that he wants to follow in his footsteps and make people laugh. His father tells him that he can only be a ‘sad clown’ due to stolen childhood.
Fast forward to 1973, Javier’s first day at the circus, he falls for trapeze artist Natalia (Carolina Bang), the girlfriend of the head clown Sergio (Antonio de la Torrio). Big mistake! When Sergio gets drunk he beats up Natalia. As well he is very jealous. So begins a rivalry between these two clowns that will result in a bloodbath as both become grotesquely disfigured and lose control. Innocent victims are caught in between.
The film is an obvious allegory of the Spanish Civil War as Javier (the sad clown) and Sergio (the funny clown) fight over the same woman, Natalia. The woman represents Spain. It also shows the vicious cycle that is so prevalent in society: violence begets violence and it is the innocent who are caught in the middle and endure the greater suffering.
