Journal D’Un Coopérant / Diary of an Aid Worker par / by Robert Morin

Robert Morin, himself, takes the lead role in this ‘pseudo-documentary’ about NGO aid worker, Jean-Marc Phaneuf, who decides to do a video-diary of his stay in Africa, Burundi to be exact. He is an electronics technician for Radio du Monde, whose responsibility is to repair broken down equipment or to bring them into the 21st century, as is the case for his current mission.  This is his first visit to Africa and he is overwhelmed by the friendliness of the people.
We follow him as Jean-Marc reports on his daily interactions and activities. To pass the time, he develops a character on an on-line medieval fantasy game.
Jean-Marc begins to focus his attention on the adolescent granddaughter (beautifully performed by Jani Alban) of his housekeeper. This leads to a bizarre twist as the plot unfolds.
This film is imbued with humour and blurs even further the fine line between documentary and fiction, expressing powerful messages regarding betrayal as well as addressing the question of what really happens to the funds destined for foreign aid. This film shows as well that even the most honourable and seemingly innocent of intentions can turn sour.

Meeting Zeus and a Cretan Goddess

Zeus
Snake Goddess

My brother Jon and I are very different. He’s quietly curious and knowledgeable. I’m overly-excitable and annoying. But we have one thing in common: the quest for adventure. He needed little coaxing when I asked him to come to Crete with me.   With thumbs-up and a subtle smile, he signaled he was game for the ride – lucky for me, given the dangerous roads we had to drive.
Barely having time to bid my dogs good-bye, Greece swept us up as swiftly as Apollo’s chariot traversing the heavens. Sky-high and safe, we snoozed in Air Transat’s wide seats offering great leg room. Jon and I are no spring chickens, so we both appreciated the comfy nighttime flight that rejuvenated my usual jet lag.

Chania, Crete
I stayed on in Athens while intrepid Jon headed for Chania, Crete where I would join him three days later. We would drive along Crete’s southwestern shore, and swim in its lovely Libyan sea and hike like Hercules.
Checking into a darling hotel named Plaka, I was surprised by it cozy affordable charm and quiet beauty. Its location put me in the middle of Midas gold: shopping, dining and ancient sites.  I had the best of both worlds:  a lively Plaka neighborhood outside; tranquil Plaka Hotel inside.  My room offered a breathtaking view of the acropolis, but it got even better atop Plaka’s roof garden. An awesome 360-degree view of Athens revealed itself. Two hotel feasts: the view and breakfast!
It was time to meet Jon. We were both set on doing some spectacular hiking in southwestern Crete’s incredible gorges. Our favourite hike was Imbros Gorge, Four hours to the finish line with a beach to reward you. No matter the gorge, a treasure of floral magnificence unfolded. Orchids poked out of crevices dug deep into the earth. Oleanders, lilies and poppies appeared among intimidating boulders.  Our feet were treading over billions years of time!
No trip to Crete would be complete without serious caving, so Jon and I set out to find the Ida cave – birthplace of Zeus.  After driving hours to reach the foot of Mount Psilaritis’s 2,456 metres, we stumbled upon the legendary cave.  What a disappointment! We were staring into a black cavern with no opening to explore. I went red with rage. Never one to interfere, Jon let me have a go at the god. Carefully stepping down the stairs leading into Zeus’s rock hovel, I cursed the God in broken Greek. We had traveled over 1000 kilometers (I allowed myself poetic exaggeration) and all he could give us was a dank cave, an old Cretan goat and some crows flying overhead. Albeit, their cawing supplied some eeriness, but we deserved better! Even the off-tune lute music we had heard the night before in a hotel high up in  Monasteraki village and the priest we had met in Meronas who requested I stay thirteen days to convert me into a good Greek Orthodox girl  was more interesting than this. Crete has over 2000 caves. Why did this one have to be a dud?
The next day I realized Zeus had been present, for he gave us an unforgettable gift. It happened while we were trying to traverse the waters along Kourtaliotiko Gorge.  Suddenly, a beautiful nymph-like lady appeared.  “I’m Sylvie: follow me,” she said, waving.” This goddess guide led us out of the gorge. We were ascending into unknown territory.  “Welcome to my home, she smiled.” It was a cave covered in flowers with running water, even fire. Stretched out over one of her cave cushions, Sylvie cooked us our first cave meal: keftedes (meatballs), tzadziki with herbs picked outside her cave and yogurt with honey from the gods.   Lulled by Sylvie’s magical manner, we nicknamed her Calypso – Odysseus’s kidnapper.  Our hiking was put on hold. My ‘Ode to a Cretan Urge” was being fulfilled right here.  As stars twinkled and Sylvie smiled, the black hush of descended. We were a trio in a land resonating with minotaur myths, impenetrable mysteries and surprises that confound the imagination.

Limitless / Sans Limites by / par Neil Burger

The average human being is said to utilize only 15 – 20% of his/her brain capacity. What if a drug was developed that allow one to use 100%. This paranoia-fuelled action thriller, based on the 2001 novel “The Dark Fields” by Alan Glynn, addresses this very premise.
Eddie Mora (Bradley Cooper) is an unsuccessful down and out author. He is under contract to write a novel but can’t even type out the first word and time is quickly being exhausted. His editor is threatening to cancel his contract. He faces being evicted from his apartment and his girlfriend, Lindy (Abbie Cornish) has just broken off with him.
One day Eddie bumps into his ex-wife’s brother, Vernon Gant (Johnny Whitworth). After Eddie explains his situation, Vernon hands him a small clear pill. It is an experimental drug called NZT. Eddie takes the pill. His perception becomes more acute; he is more focused and his skills improve. To procure more NZT, he returns to Vernon’s flat. Upon arriving the door is unlocked and when he enters he discovers that Vernon has been murdered.
Eddie phones 911. While he is waiting he finds $800 plus a stash of NZT which he subsequently takes.
Taking the pills regularly, Eddie completes his novel, learns to play piano, picks up many languages and parlays the $800 into millions on the stock market. The latter attracts the attention of business mogul Carl Van Loon (Robert DeNiro) who wants Eddie to broker a large merger (the largest corporate merger in history.)
The NZT begins to have serious side effects: blackouts, headaches and dependency on the drug. Soon Eddie finds himself pursued by gangsters, police and other shady characters, many of whom are interested in his stash of NZT.
This is a well-crafted thriller with an original thought provoking premise. The star-studded cast gives an engaging performances lending credibility to the plot. The special effects were well done and did not take away from the narrative.

Eddie Mora (Bradley Cooper) est un auteur down and out infructueux.

This bitter-sweet multi-generational social drama deals with the concept of how painful memories can cause feelings of anger and an inability to let go. A man (Michel Barrette) is unable to accept the death of his second wife, Louange (Véronique Beaudet). Leaving his two young children that he fathered with her, he elopes with her corpse and sets out ‘to bring her home’.
The man’s sisters are concerned so they convince his eldest son (Patrick Hivon), from his first marriage to get his grandfather (Jean Lapointe) and chase after his father. His grandfather is currently in a nursing home. The three men do not get along and bear deep resentments against each other. The son is haunted by a childhood trauma. All three have difficulties with drinking and controlling their anger. They all behave impulsively.
The three principle actors give effective and natural performances and play off of each other’s character.  Jean Lapointe is superb in his role and adds a strong comedic element to lighten up this dark film. This film gives an authentic portrayal of Quebec reality.

Mourn Ye The Loss of Innocence

by Nancy Snipper

How is it that the red rose
Robed in petals silk and soft
Can sprout a thorn
Whose pointed part pricks the heart
and plucks out youth
A peace once born,
so sweet, so soft, so unadorned
and coils it into crusty age
that caws and crawls around a skeletal cage
of a once red rose?

Land of Destiny by / par Brett Story

Feature length documentary that examines the perplexing dilemma that faces many communities: economic prosperity versus environmental and personal health.
The city of Sarnia has been a major centre for the petrochemical industry since 1942 when Polymer Corporation established itself there and today over twenty major companies have established themselves in Sarnia.
The cost of this ‘prosperity and security’ has been enormous on the 70 thousand residents in the Sarnia region. They have had to deal with pollutants spewed out in the air and toxic leaks into the water supply. Many of the residents live next to the refineries; suffer from serious health issues (cancer, chemical poisoning etc) or mourning the death of a loved one.
An intimate portrait of one of the paradoxes of modern life; and this one can be found in our own backyard.

Jaloux / Jealousy par / by Patrick Demers

First feature film by Patrick Demers is a psychological thriller in the style of Claude Chabrol. Thomas (Maxime Denommée) and Marianne (Sophie Cadieux) married for seven years, are feeling the strain in their relationship. She feels restricted by his jealousy.
Thinking that a weekend in the country would do them both good, Thomas phones his uncle, Michel, to ask if he could borrow his chalet. Michel says it is OK and tells Thomas that he needs to get the keys for the chalet from his next door neighbour, Benoît. Thomas calls Benoît but there is no answer. Thomas and Marianne go to the chalet; and Thomas thinking that he would get the keys upon arrival. The keys are in the door. They enter. Someone is already there. It’s Benoît (Benoît Gouin)? He hangs out with the couple all weekend.
The use of flashback sequences to attempt to clarify the narrative or to fill in the blanks does not work and in this reviewer’s mind tended to muddy up the plot. The characters and their situation did not engage. Less improvisation would have resulted in a more gripping film.

The Lincoln Lawyer / Le Défense Lincoln by / par Brad Furman

This thriller’s central character is a streetwise lawyer who operates out of a chauffeur-driven Lincoln Continental Sedan. For most of his career Michael ‘Mick’ Haller (Matthew McConaughey) has defended petty-gutter-variety criminal, mainly settling out of court, getting paid and moving on to the next case.
When Beverly Hills playboy, Louis Roulet (Ryan Phillippe) is accused of attempted rape and murder, Haller is approached to handle the case. He accepts to handle the case thinking that it would be simple, straightforward and ‘easy money.’
As it turns out the M.O. in this case is very similar to a case that Haller handled four years ago. The suspect that he had defended was encouraged to plead guilty and was sentenced to life. Realising that the wrong man was sent to prison, Haller becomes determined to correct this error. Now Haller must face the hardest case of his career. Haller is now caught between the two clients. The question of client-attorney privilege prevents him from using any evidence against Roulet. Roulet is trying to avoid going to prison. A deadly match of manipulation ensues between them. Who will be the master?
The casting of the two actors in the leading roles does not quite work out, whereas that of the supporting roles gives this film its saving grace. William H. Macy as Frank Levin, Haller’s best friend and his investigator adds an exquisite touch of humour.

This director is destined to take his place on the top rank of other Quebec filmmakers such as Denys Arcand and Gilles Carle.

Abbey Hall and Resurgence by Nancy Snipper

 Abbey Hall

Brandish me your golden chain.
Devil’s dungeon, burning flame.
Creation’s roar.
A slave in pain.

Oh would that this secret
whose thousand links
are years of bonded time,
Would burst and bury
the browning bones
moaning of tortured minds!

Resurgence

These times are fraught with most ill favour,
a muted trumpet whose sound lies limp.
It cannot speak, its glory stopped,
chambered in a valve to rot.

Die you devils
Dark as agents,
You cannot kill our sound, our voice,
Though it be gentle, timid and humble
It is here forever
Rejoice!

Oh happy song
that shakes our heart
that stirs the tiger
and makes him start
to burn inside
to feel alive
to leap an infinite mile wide.

Terrible trumpet
trample it down
deep into the jaws of the ground.
Wild trumpet
burst in song.
Bubble, banter
Please bleet on!

Break the devil’s beautiful bones,
make him screech
make him moan.
Tear out your mute,
                                    No longer shy,
                                                              Cry to bleed,
                                                                                     Sigh to try!

3D Entertainment on the verge of revolution / Le divertissement en 3D sur le point de révolution :

Imagine your favourite films of all time shown as they were meant to be – in 3D; to feel as if you were part of the film itself. Now, thanks to a strategic alliance between Los Angeles-based Kings Road Entertainment and Montreal-based software company, i3Dscope Corporation, this will soon be possible.
Among the many projects will be the establishment of a new production centre. With the location criteria being a talent pool deep enough to support continued growth and sufficient experience in film and new media, the search has been narrowed down to six potential sites: Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver in Canada; North Carolina, Orlando and New Mexico in the States.
Kings Road made a name for itself by producing successful movies such as “All of Me”, “Kickboxer” “The Big Easy” among many others. I3Dscope with its recently developed 3D SENS Pro conversion of 2D to 3D technology is now poised to make 3D entertainment available to all and to greatly lower costs. Through extensive research, knowledge and skills, including how the brain and our eyes perceive the images around us, i3Dscope has developed the software to use a unique set of algorithms and optical techniques to produce stunning real-time HD 3D images.
The average annual growth in revenue for 3D for both television and the big screen is expected to reach 95% from $140 million in 2008 to 15.8 billion in 2015, a lucrative market indeed. Once the hardware is in place, the software technology, already in place, will be there to deliver.
Kings Road Entertainment plans to convert its entire library to 3D at the rate three to five films per year. Currently two feature films are in pre-production and one is in development. The first in pre-production is a re-imagining of the Sloan Brother’s saga, “Kickboxer” (with an added dimension and pulsating in a contemporary pace, the viewing of action films will change forever); “Wings of the Dragon 3D” promises to give the world a new action franchise with a new kind of hero competing in a contest where there is only one survivor.  In development is a remake of Steve Martin’s 1984 classic “All of Me,” co-starring Lily Tomlin.
Feel the characters come to life, so real you can almost touch them. Be ever present, as if you were in the ‘eye of the storm’, in the tropics or on the other side of the universe; all of this in the comfort of our living rooms. We are one step closer to virtual reality and to the holodecks or holosuites of Star Trek fame. The possibilities are endless.

All of Me", "Kickboxer", "The Big Easy" parmi beaucoup d'autres.

Des Hommes et Des Dieux / Of Gods and Men par / by Xavier Beauvois

The film opens with a quotation from Ps 82:6-7. Basically states that although we are gods and sons of the ‘Most High’ we still shall die as men.
In 1996, seven monks were abducted and subsequently beheaded from a monastery in Tibhirine, Algeria. Little is known about what actually happened. A local fundamentalist Muslim group has claimed responsibility yet there is speculation that it could be governmental forces.
Using this incident as a premise for his latest work, Xavier Beauvois creates a slow-moving testimony to the power of faith. The narrative focuses on the time leading up to the incident. As the monks faced this difficult decision: do they return home to France or stay for the sake of the locals and defy the fundamentalists?
This outstanding film is a result of thorough research and preparation. The screenplay is inspired by the writings of two of the Tibhirine monks. The depth of preparation is apparent in the performances of the actors who portrayed the monks (included Lambert Wilson, Michael Lonsdale and Olivier Rabourdin). The end result was so authentic and possessed such a strong chemistry that one believes that they have been monks for all of their lives.
