Partially based on the director’s personal experience, this social drama explores the moments of our lives when complete transformations takes place and how we often must begin again.
Oliver Fields’ (Ewan McGregor), a 38-year-old successful graphic designer, father Hal (Christopher Plummer) has just recently passed away at the age of 79. When Oliver’s mother passed away four years prior, Hal came out of the closet to announce that he was gay. He had been married for 45 years. Due to society’s approach vis-à-vis his sexual orientation, Hal found it necessary to hide behind the facade of a traditional marriage.
Shortly after his father’s death, Oliver meets Anna (Mélanie Laurent), a French actress, at a party. This new love brings back memories of Hal’s relationship with his younger boyfriend, Andy (Goran Visnjic).
What follows are two well edited parallel stories. One follows the relationship between Oliver and Anna with Hal’s Jack Russell Arthur (Cosmo) tagging along. The other is the growing bond between father and son, Hal and Oliver with Hal’s boyfriend Andy seeking acceptance from Oliver.
An amusing element in this film was the multiple exchanges between Oliver and Arthur. Oliver would talk to him and Arthur responds with subtitles.
The film is an entertaining exploration of the obstacles that each generation has had to face, external in the 1950s to internal in the 1990s and early 2000s.
