Chemins des Songes et Rêves / Ways of Dreaming

Samedi / Saturday 26 Novembre / November 26 2011 À l'Église Unitarienne de Montréal / at Unitarian Church of Montreal

First half:
Mark Pinkus on Grand Steinway piano with Gyandev (double bass) and Punham (flute and tambourine). A selection of seven original compositions that were inspired by actual events and or people. For example the first piece, "She Came in from the Cold" was inspired by a woman knocking on his door selling candles on a cold winter's day. He invites her in and offers her a hot beverage. Other pieces such as “The Missing Dress” were anecdotal in nature. This one in particular reminded me of a Hollywood romance of the silent era. The melodies were lyrical. “The Little Boy and His Boat” was extremely gorgeous. “From a Country far Away” exuded a sense of non-connection. Over-all a sense of family and friends gathering around the piano after a grand meal.

Second half:
Bel Canto soprano singer Louise Yard sang a selection of nine classic songs from the opera and musical theatre worlds based on the theme "ways of dreaming." She was accompanied (also on the Grand Steinway) by Pierre McLean. Her voice, often piercingly shrill, did not quite measure up to the high standards required by the song selection. Pierre's accompaniment was fine but not outstanding. The songs selected did reflect the intended concept.
Mixing new-age piano and vocal classics together on the same bill did not leave a palatable artistic after taste. The claim made at the outset that this would be a rare event did not hold true.
The Grand Steinway was built in 1890 and had been played on by Rachmaninoff.
