A gritty, hard-hitting and un-flinching
drama based on the criminal career of notorious serial killer Richard Leonard "The
Iceman" Kuklinski (April 11, 1935 – March 5, 2006).
Leading a double life, neither his wife nor his children knew of his true
profession as a hit man. The film spans the period between 1964 and his arrest

The film opens with Kuklinski (played
with piercing intensity by Michael Shannon) out on a first date with Deborah
Pellicotti (Winona Ryder), his future wife. She is shy and naïve and is
disparately trying to get him to converse. He tells her that he ‘dubs’ film for
Disney. Despite his abruptness and lack of words he wins her over with his
charm. Shortly thereafter, he is in a pool hall and his true nature is revealed.
In 1965 he is recruited as a hit
man for local Mafia boss Roy Demeo (Ray Liotta). With his cold-hearted nonchalant
approach to murder and his intimidating impenetrable stature, Richard Kuklinski
quickly makes a name for himself. But
due to his Polish-American background, he would always be an outsider, never to
be fully integrated into the Mafia.
The most disturbing question that
this film stirs up is whether Kuklinski was really ‘tame’ in his domestic life
(as portrayed in the film) or was it an elaborate disguise? To lead such an extreme dichotomy as long as
he did, with his family being totally clueless as to his ‘real’ occupation,
defies the imagination.

Le film s'ouvre avec Kuklinski (joué avec une intensité perçante par
Michael Shannon) out sur une première sortie avec Deborah Pellicotti (Winona
Ryder), sa future épouse. Elle est timide et naïf et elle est disparate en
essayant de lui faire converser. Il lui dit qu'il « double » des films pour
Disney. Malgré sa brusquerie et son manque de mots, il la séduit avec son
charme. Peu après, il est dans une salle de billard et sa vraie nature se
révèle.
En 1965, il est recruté comme
un tueur à gages pour le patron local de la Mafia, Roy Demeo (Ray Liotta). Avec
son approche nonchalante de sang-froid pour assassiner et sa stature impénétrable et intimidante,
Richard Kuklinski fait rapidement un nom pour lui-même. Mais en raison de ses
antécédents Polonaise-Américaine, il serait toujours un outsider, jamais à
s'intégrer parfaitement dans la Mafia.
La question la plus
troublante que ce film suscite est si Kuklinski a été vraiment « docile » dans
sa vie domestique (comme dépeint dans le film) ou était-ce un déguisement
élaborée? Pour mener une telle
dichotomie extrême aussi longtemps qu'il l'a fait, avec sa famille étant
totalement désemparés quant à son occupation « réelle », défie
l'imagination.
