Fred Dubé Terroriste Blanc d'Amérique
Humorist Fred Dubé delivers an absurdist show exposing who the true ‘terrorists’ are in the world today. The delivery was fast and often funny but due to some unfamiliarity with some of the issues covered, I missed the point a number of times but many in the audience did not, judging by the outbursts of laughter.

Fills Monkey – Incredible Drum Show, France, 75m

Fills Monkey is a drum duo consisting of Yann Coste and Sébastien Rambaud. They first met in 2005, when a Parisian cymbals dealer requested that they do a demonstration in his store. Deciding that these ‘demonstrations’ were ‘too serious’ in their judgment, they began to bring in a more fantastic and humoristic approach. Thus Fills Monkey – Incredible Drum Show was born. A very unique show that combines virtuosic synchronized drumming, hi-tech lighting, poetic mime,  circus-like comedy guaranteed to reenergize your batteries no   matter how old or worn out they may be. The show continues
until July 21st (same venue, same time every night.)

Slightly Fat Features is a unique comedy troupe that superbly combines vaudeville cabaret of the 1920s and 30s with the surreal comedy of Monty Python and the modern circus-theatre of Cirque du Soleil.
For the first time ever, they have ‘crash-landed’ in Montreal, with their latest show “Variety Soup.” It is a hilarious multi-faceted show presented in cabaret style with acrobats, magic, Houdini-style escapes, bullet catching, tiger taming, live music and much more. This must-see show continues in the same above mentioned venue until August 2nd, playing every night (except Mondays) at 7pm. You will be laughing until you belly hurts, dazzled by amazing feats and gorging on the extensive smorgasbord of imaginatively inventive theatrical and musical entertainment.

July 12 Juillet 19h00 @ La Chapelle
Scotstown, Canada, 60m
English version of original 2008 French play (originally scripted, directed and performed by Fabien Cloutier). Translation by David Laurin, interpreted by Hubert Proux.

I did not see the original version, so my critique of last night’s show is not of the original. For me, this was the worst performances I have ever seen. The description in the program reads as follows: “Scotstown is a corrosive and dark comedy.” I found this to be true, but not in the way that it was meant. Corrosive – the interpretation was corroding my nerves; dark – the light-switch in the room where the actor’s talent was supposed to be was not turned on; comedy – it must have been still in Scotstown. Definitely unedited and seemingly unrehearsed, the play rambled on for 96 minutes – 36 more than scheduled. It was overly crass, vulgar and humorless (I might as well have stayed at home listening to the same boring banter from one of my neighbors).

19h00: Le Harry Potter Show, Quebec / Québec, 60m

We have all been invited to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, to witness firsthand the goings-on of this ‘famous’ school, that was Harry Potter’s home for seven years. The story of this ‘famous’ wizard unfolded in seven novels adapted to eight films. Through a series of sketches and stand-up monologues, we are privy to certain aspects of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry that are not mentioned in the novels and movies. Humorous well-performed by the whole ensemble and an engaging script.

Daniel Grenier is a stand-up comic and singer-songwriter, who along with Francis Cloutier and Simon-Olivier Fecteau (who would later be replaced by Ghyslain Dufresne), founded the absurd, quirky and surreal comedy troupe Les Chick’n Swell in 1990. In January 2014, the group announced that they were splitting up as each member had personal projects. En Prismacolor is Daniel Grenier’s first solo appearance on stage. The same absurdity, quirkiness and surrealism abounded as Grenier enticed the audience to enter his world as he depicted his view of reality. Rapid fire humor from start to finish that was interspersed with song, texts and images.

Paul Dabek “Liar Liar”, United Kingdom / Royaume-Uni, 60m

Paul Dabek is a performer that superbly combines cabaret-style comedy with magic. Going much further than a typical magic show, Dabek engages his audience from the get-go and doesn’t let go until the show is over.  The audience leaves, reluctantly, with a strong desire for more. The humor is deliciously funny, the magic – enjoyably deceptive. He ended the show with an amazing and clever four minute display of Shadowography – the art of hand shadows. He is one of the few exponents of this art, creating realistically looking animals of all shapes and sizes, using only his hands and a small white light. A theatrical song was used as a soundtrack.
