When the editor-in-chief of Seattle Magazine, Bridget goes around the table seeking the next headlining story, all suggestions are rejected until above classified ad is shown on the screen. She assigns writer Jeff (Jake Johnson) to go to Ocean View, Washington to find and profile the man behind the ad. To assist him, interns Darius and Arnau (Aubrey Plaza and Karan Soni respectively) accompany him. The ad is unusual and preposterous. All they have to go on is the PO Box number.
When the threesome check into the hotel, Jeff reveals that he has a hidden agenda. When Jeff was younger, his parents used to travel to Ocean View for their summer vacations. He had developed a love interest with Liz, who lives in the beach community and he now wants to track her down. Darius, asserting herself as the lead reporter, stakes out the PO Box number. Arnau assists her. Kenneth (Mark Duplass) turns up. She finds out he works stocking shelves at the local grocery with canned goods. Pretending to file a note of praise for Kenneth, she succeeds in getting his address.
Jeff is able to reconnect with Liz but when he opens up to her, she rejects him. He returns to the group. He attempts to answer Kenneth’s ad but Kenneth sees right through him and drives him off his property. Darius poses as a candidate to accompany Kenneth. His initial reaction is one of leeriness. He thinks Darius is working for ‘secret agents’ who want to steal his ‘time machine.’ Despite this, Kenneth agrees to start a series of ‘training exercises.’ Darius gains his trust and in spite of the ‘absurdity’ of the mission, she admires his dedication and skills.
A well-conceived ‘Underdog’ tale with a very original bent.
