The first part featured six songs composed by guitarist Mike Rud from his Juno Award-winning 2013 CD "Notes on Montréal.” The songs were inspired by classic literary texts about Montreal by the likes of Mordecai Richler, Gabrielle Roy, Leonard Cohen and others. Originally arranged for voice, guitar, rhythm section and string quartet, the six songs were rearranged for big band, guitar and voice. The songs were beautifully sung by Toronto-based Sienna Dahlen. Her voice is compelling, soulful and alluring. She brings home the message of the songs, evoking their intended message. The stylings were eclectic and well composed, containing elements of jazz, folk and pop, reflecting the cosmopolitan feeling of Montreal. Rud’s guitar playing is first-rate and performed with clarity, in perfect harmony with Sienna’s voice.

For the second part Jennifer Bell and l’Orchestre National de Jazz took us on an inspired journey into the works of William Shakespeare by performing Duke Ellington’s 12-part suite “Such Sweet Thunder (1957).” Each part is a musical illustration of some of the Bard’s most iconic characters thus, in essence, transforming the musicians into actors. An eclectic suite ranging through many styles from lilting ballads to up-tempo blues, a joy to play and to hear.

This suite was commissioned by the ONJM and is dedicated to the composers (listed above) who have shaped and molded her own voice as a composer. Jan Jarczyk was her professor in composition. The suite is eclectic in that it rocked; it soothed and had moments of playfulness and serious thought. Sienna’s velvety and angelic voice and Steve’s atmospheric guitar added a heavenly touch. This suite confirms my feeling that Christine Jensen will find her place among the ranks of major composers such as Bach, Beethoven, Gershwin Ellington and many others. It goes without saying that her compositional mentors are pleased with the result.
